THINKING I’D LAST FOREVER
2008–2018
Antiquarian books, electronic mechanisms
Approx. 30cm x 40cm x 20cm (different sizes)
The series thinking I‘d last forever features antiquarian books, classics of world literature, which seem to breathe through small mechanisms within. Each book’s rhythm is individually tailored, their covers are raised and lowered, unfolding their pages and exposing their fragility for a brief moment.
In this gentle motion, air flows between the pages, activating the layered narratives inscribed into the aged objects: the stories written by the authors intertwine with traces left by former owners — dedications marking the books as gifts, dog-ears, underlines, and inscriptions that reveal personal connections.
The breathing books invite empathy, prompting reflection on books as more than vessels of knowledge; they become portals to imagined worlds harnessing fiction’s transformative power. As Donna Haraway might suggest, they construct speculative worlds that challenge the boundaries of the known, offering spaces to reimagine relationships, histories, and futures.
