Liminal Passage
2018
Glas, distilled water, exchangeable mouthpieces
Each object approx. 40 cm x 60 cm x 20 cm
Liminal Passage was created before the global pandemic, at a time when the act of breathing was an almost invisible, unconscious process, far from the heightened awareness it holds today. The installation brings this everyday exchange into focus, transforming the flow of air into a shared, tangible experience.
Visitors are invited to consciously engage in the reciprocal act of giving and receiving breath. Exhaled air passes through a glass object, where it is purified of viruses and bacteria via water filtration, and can then be inhaled on the opposite side through a sterile mouthpiece. To complete the exchange, participants must switch roles, making the process inherently mutual.
This intimate interaction between strangers is further accentuated by soft flooring, encouraging a receptive and grounded stance. Liminal Passage creates a quiet, reflective space where the shared vulnerability of breathing becomes a poetic act of connection — bridging boundaries, bodies, and the invisible rhythms of life.
